Questions Answered

From hannam.myadventures.org

As we finish our trip, here're some thoughts from our students...

What fears did you overcome?

Getting out of my comfort zone.  Not being in a situation I was used to.  Talking to homeless people.  I barely ever get to do that, but now I'm comfortable with it.  -- Joshua

Describe your trip simply...
Moving.  Different.  Changing.  Difficult.  It's like an investigation, but you're investigating yourself, and you learn new things that you never knew about yourself.  -- Caleigh
From hannam.myadventures.org
Share two meaningful moments with your crew...

When we shared from our (devotional journals) we had a lot of interesting things come up, like how believing and following are two different things.  Even the demons believe that Jesus exists...  But following Jesus, that's work.  I also like helping the poor and helping the homeless.  I felt like we really connected.  -- Jimmy

From hannam.myadventures.orgFrom hannam.myadventures.org How did your leader impact you?
She planned the whole thing and kept it all together and got us here.  She sacrificed a lot to help us serve God.  She reflected God because she pushed away everything and had the attitude of serving God, and it made me want to do the same.  -- Avery

Summarize your trip in five words...
Worthwhile.  Changes your life too.  -- Anna

From hannam.myadventures.orgFrom hannam.myadventures.orgWhat characteristic of God did you see this week?
When I talked to the seniors and learned all their different personalities...  It's really cool how God makes everyone different.  It was really cool to see what they're like.  -- Justin

If this trip was a Chicago-style deep dish pizza, what would you call it?
"The pizza of a lifetime!"  -- Ryan

Middle School Missionaries!!

From hannam.myadventures.org

32 Seventh Graders from Grace Christian Middle School in Columbus, Ohio arrived to serve in the Pilsen Community of Chicago earlier today!

From hannam.myadventures.org

My co-worker Emily and I (Hanna) met them at the Bean in Millenium Park.

From hannam.myadventures.orgFrom hannam.myadventures.org

We then split the group in three parts.  Crew A (who named themselves the Kahei Unicorns!) served at New Life Pilsen's after school program, "Safe Haven".  Emily and Crew B did the same at Maranatha Church.  Pastor Robert and I took Crews C and D out to the streets to meet homeless people and offer them a sack lunch.

Packing the sack lunches turned out to be quite a production!!

From hannam.myadventures.org

We also wrote letters for the people we'd meet, asking the Lord to give us Scriptures
and words of encouragement that would help introduce them to Jesus.

From hannam.myadventures.org

After we returned, we had a fantastic spaghetti super, and then cleaned up quickly before church.  The Wednesday night service at New Life Pilsen offered us a chance to meet the church members and swap stories about ministry in Chicago.

From hannam.myadventures.org

Please pray for us tomorrow as we work at a home for seniors and do a city cleanup project in the morning.  In the afternoon, we'll help with after school programs and homeless outreach.

Red Light, Green Light

The traffic whirled around me as I headed downtown this afternoon.  I grew up here, but five or six years have passed since I've driven in Chicago rush hour traffic.

As I approached Pastor Robert's house for a late-afternoon ministry planning session, I noticed a homeless man standing in the middle of the road holding a sign and asking for help.  I scrambled to get ahold of the few coins in my cup holder while rolling down my window and attempting not to impede the flow of traffic.

God helped me out and turned the light red.

As I reached across to hand the money out the window, the man's eyes focused on a McDonald's bag in my passenger seat.

Now that's what I need...  I'm sorry-it's empty...

From hannam.myadventures.org

A Bible.  Huh?

It took me a moment to realize that the homeless guy was not hoping for a hamburger.  Rather, he noticed my Bible on the seat wished aloud that he had one.  I would have given him my personal Bible, but I hesitated for a second, a little sad to give us something so precious to me.

Suddenly I remembered that I had received a free Bible just the other day.  It came with a purchase I made at the local bookstore, and it was on the floor in my car.  Trying to beat the green light, I scooped it up and held it out the window.  What a beautiful smile landed on this man's face as the Lord answer his prayer.

I didn't even have time to ask his name, but I know that the Lord has a plan for his life.  I know because I almost didn't bring my Bible today.  I know because I don't typically drive around with an extra Bible.  I know because I don't always stop and give out money.  I know because the light turned red at just the right moment.

Then it turned green.

Seconds raced - Compassion responded - Truth reached out

Heaven touched earth

KINGDOM CAME.

Street Outreach & Hospital Visits

Salvadorians celebrate November 2nd as "The Day of the Dead" - similar to our Halloween, but much darker spiritually.  With this in mind, we spent the morning at a local park passing out Gospel tracts and using balloon animals and face painting to start conversations with children and their parents.

Salomon had one of the lengthiest conversations, talking to two men for 30 minutes about the importance of Bible study.

Here in El Salvador, a lot of people get hung up over denominational differences and by calling themselves "Christians" but following false teaching.  Salomon worked to explain how you have to read the Bible to know the truth and how the truth will set you free.

After the park outreach, we visited the charity hospital and prayed with people like Ana.  A bus hit her and dragged her down the road 7 months ago, and she lost one whole arm plus pieces of the other and of her torso.  When we met her, Ana lay almost naked in a bed with a water bottled propped on her chest, crying.  Her mother is constantly telling her that this happened as a punishment from the Lord.  We were able to explain that Jesus loves her and wants to give her life and hope, not judgment.

Homeless Outreach

Salomon, Hanna, and I (Casey) just returned from assisting the Kneppers with their homeless ministry. We were able to provide 26 meals and gospel tracts to homeless people living on the streets of Santa Ana. The meals prepared by the Knepper family included spaghetti, coffee. Most of the homeless people we encountered tonight were under bondage from alcoholism and other addictions.

We spent some time praying for them as a group before and after we met with them.

Tomorrow we will spend some time passing out balloon animals and sharing the Lord at a local park, and then we will head to the hospital and spend time praying for patients.  In the evening, we'll join Calvary Chapel Divine Grace for their midweek service.

Orphanage Visit

This morning, we toured one of the state-run orphanages and then had an opportunity to spend time doing crafts with a few of the girls there.  Some of the girls' stories are heart breaking...

Salomon and I (Hanna) made Gospel bead bracelets and necklaces with three girls (ages 15,15 and 16).  One of the girls had lived with a boyfriend for a year and a half and then come to the orphanage because he abused her and she had nowhere else to go.  She soon hopes to reunite with her mother.

Another girl made some bad life choices (she describes herself as a "wild child") and got in trouble with the law.  They sent her to the orphanage for two months to give her a chance to change.  Recently, she accepted Christ and has repented of her crazy lifestyle.  In December, she will return to her family, and she plans to become involved in church.

The third girl's story really broke my heart.  Her parents divorced, and she had been living with her father.  He abused her, and her mother attempted to regain custody of her.  When the girl's father found out, he hired someone to kill her mother.  The attempt failed, but the mother suffered serious injuries to one arm and leg.  Right now, the dad is in jail, the mother is in the hospital, and this girl is at the orphanage hoping for things to get better...

After spending time with these girls, we met back up with Casey and Oscar, who had painted sun catchers with a larger group of kids.  We then went to the special needs section of the orphanage and helped to feed the children lunch.  Many of these kids are wheelchair bound and very under-stimulated.  A physical therapist comes twice a week, but these kids really need constant attention and no one is there to help.

The Kneppers are praying about making this orphanage a regularly scheduled spot on their monthly ministry schedule.  Pray that they will build lasting relationships with the girls at the orphanage and be able to train them up in the ways of the Lord-the only true way to change their life circumstances.

Sorry there are no pictures allowed at the orphanage, but here are some from our arrival at the Kneppers tonight:

The Beginning of Our Journey

It's the end of day two, and we have so much to share...

From hannam.myadventures.org

After two pleasant and uneventful flights, we arrived in San Salvador last night and were greeted by our host, David Knepper.

From hannam.myadventures.org

We managed to catch a few hours of sleep before we awoke early this morning and enjoyed a Salvadorian breakfast.  Next, we attended the largest Calvary Chapel outside the US. The worship service and communion were true blessings.

From hannam.myadventures.org

Afterwards, David took us on a tour of the city which included dinning at Pollo Campero, visiting the local soccer outreach, riding thru the street market, and visiting the city's largest mall.  We have lots more details to share, but for now we're exhausted and heading to bed.

Please continue to pray for us.  We are really excited to serve at CIPI orphanage tomorrow morning!

El Salvador Trip 2011

Earlier this year, the Missions Team at Calvary Chapel of Clermont began asking the Lord to provide an opportunity for our church to reconnect with foreign missions.  We want to serve the Lord, not only in our own community, but also in other nations.

Recently, doors opened for us to send a small team to El Salvador this fall with the purpose of establishing a lasting connection with Calvary Chapel missionaries there and planning for future involvement.  October 29th to November 6thSalomon Vasquez, Casey Harrison and Hanna Miecznikowski will travel to El Salvador to serve with Calvary Chapel missionaries there and to learn more about ministry needs in Central America.

They will visit a large church in San Salvador and volunteer at a nearby orphanage.  Then they will travel to Santa Ana to help the Knepper family with their brand new church plant-Calvary Chapel Divine Grace.  The Kneppers focus on ministry to women and children and to the local homeless population.  Finally, the team will attend a Calvary Chapel missions conference to meet missionaries from all over Central America and ask them how they see the Lord at work in the region.

Calvary Chapel of Clermont strongly desires to gain an understanding of the spiritual needs in Central America and to develop a long-term partnership with a missionary family there so that we can send back at least three more mission teams during the next two years.

WANT TO GET INVOLVED??  YOU CAN...

  • PRAY - We meet for prayer every Wednesday night at 8pm at Calvary Chapel of Clermont, and we'd love your prayers anytime from anywhere.  You can even leave a prayer as a response to this post!
  • GIVE - We need to raise $3,072 for our team's expenses.  Checks payable toCalvary Chapel Clermont with "El Salvador" in the memo line can be left in the offering box or mailed to CCC Missions, c/o Hanna Miecznikowski, PO Box 653, Clermont, GA 30527.
  • GO - We hope to return to Central America three times in the next two years.  If you'd like to join us, please email your name, contact info and skills toccclermont@bellsouth.net.  We'll be in touch to help you get connected!
  • SHOP - Join us at 5934 Cleveland Highway, Clermont, GA from 8am-1pm on October 1st for a church-wide yard sale.  All proceeds help our trip!

Missions B.O.P.

About Missions B.O.P.

We all have a three-part life mission spelled out for us in the Word of God... B.O.P.

  • Believe in Jesus
  • Obey Jesus
  • Point others to Jesus

If you look at John 3:22-36, you see how John lived out his whole life in such a way that he continually pointed people to Jesus.  He didn't want glory or attention for himself, he just wanted people to believe in Jesus and obey him with their lives.

We all have that same purpose...  Our lives are not about us!  We need to belive in Jesus, obey Him, and point others to Him.

This summer (2011), I shared over and over again with the teams I led that they need to believe in Jesus, obey Him and point others to Him.  I've attempted to share some of the stories that took place as they tried to live this out.  I've had an amazing 7 weeks, and it's been all about people who B.O.P.

It's beeen interesting to see how the Lord can use our service to pave the way for the ministry of others.  It feels really good to do physical work that will have spiritual fruit!!
